What Are Polynucleotides?

Polynucleotides are injectable treatments made from highly purified DNA fragments, usually derived from salmon or trout. They are thought to support the skin’s own repair processes — including hydration, elasticity and collagen production — helping improve skin quality from within.

They are particularly popular for the delicate skin under the eyes, where options are limited, as well as for crepey skin on the face and neck, fine lines and overall texture.

Is It Right for You?

Polynucleotides tend to suit people with thin, crepey or tired-looking skin, under-eye concerns where filler isn’t suitable, or who want a gradual, natural improvement in skin quality.

They are not suitable for anyone with a fish or seafood allergy, and they don’t replace volume or treat expression lines. Evidence for polynucleotides is still developing, so we will give you a balanced view of what they can realistically achieve.

The Process

Your Treatment Journey

Consultation

We assess your skin and concerns, review your medical history — including any fish or seafood allergy — and confirm polynucleotides are a suitable choice.

Treatment

Numbing cream is applied, then the product is placed with fine injections or a cannula. Each session takes around 30 minutes.

Recovery

Small bumps, redness and possible bruising usually settle within one to two days; under-eye treatment may cause mild puffiness briefly. Avoid makeup for 12 hours, and exercise, alcohol and saunas for 24 hours.

Results & Aftercare

Results are gradual, typically becoming noticeable a few weeks after the course and continuing to improve over the following months.

Maintenance

A course of three sessions, two to three weeks apart, is typical, with optional maintenance around every six months.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are polynucleotides made from?

Purified DNA fragments, usually derived from salmon or trout, processed to be suitable for injection.

Can polynucleotides help under-eye circles?

They may improve crepey texture and skin quality under the eyes. They won't remove pigmentation or deep hollows, which may need a different approach.

How many sessions will I need?

Usually three, two to three weeks apart.

Who isn't suitable?

Anyone with a fish or seafood allergy, during pregnancy or breastfeeding, or with active skin infection in the area. We check this at consultation.

Does it hurt?

Most people find it manageable with numbing cream. The under-eye area can feel more sensitive.

Polynucleotides or Profhilo — which is better?

They work differently. Profhilo is often chosen for hydration and laxity; polynucleotides for crepey skin and the under-eyes. Some patients benefit from both.
